What is Recreation Therapy?
Therapeutic Recreation is a specialized therapy service provided to individuals with disabling conditions, illness, or injury. The goal of Recreation Therapy is to restore, remediate, and rehabilitate functional life skills while supporting overall health and well-being through meaningful recreation opportunities. These services are delivered by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and are designed to promote emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual growth through activity-based, community-based, and home-based interventions.
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists are credentialed through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, which requires a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university, completion of a professional internship, and successful passage of a national certification exam. CTRSs work in a variety of settings, including acute hospital care, psychiatric facilities, physical rehabilitation programs, neuro-skill centers, and home and community-based treatment programs. As demand for Recreation Therapy continues to grow, CTRSs play an increasingly important role in today’s healthcare system.
